2008 Director’s Community Leadership Awards

New York Anthony Bergamo
Chairman and Co-Founder
Federal Law Enforcement Foundation
Director Mueller and Anthony Bergamo

Anthony Bergamo is the Chairman and Co-Founder of the Federal Law Enforcement Foundation (FLEF). FLEF was established in 1988 by a group of business leaders who recognized that despite the incalculable contribution law enforcement makes to society, the economic support provided is often inadequate in the face of adversity and disaster.

FLEF is comprised of a voluntary Board of Directors. Every dollar raised is contributed to a law enforcement cause or program. FLEF was originally formed to provide financial support to the families of FBI agents killed in action. In addition, economic assistance was provided to agents and their families suffering from serious illness or recovering from natural disasters. As the Foundation expanded, financial assistance was extended to all federal and local law enforcement agencies for the following causes and programs:

  • Fed Kids Day Program
  • Inner-City Drug Reduction Programs
  • Summer Camp Program for Inner-City Youth
  • Scouting Programs
  • NYPD Vest Fund
  • FBI Executive Partner’s Day
  • PBA Widows and Children Fund
  • DEA Widows and Children Fund
  • Police Athletic Leagues
  • Various Law Enforcement Scholarship Funds
  • Hero’s Night Tribute in NYC
  • PAL Programs
  • NYO Citizens’ Academy
  • NYO Big Brothers and Big Sisters Program
  • NYO All Agent Conference

In a ceremony at FBI Headquarters, Director Robert S. Mueller, III recognized the recipients of the 2008 Director’s Community Leadership Award. These leaders, selected by their area FBI field office, have demonstrated outstanding contributions to their local communities through service. The FBI is grateful for the work of each of these individuals and organizations on behalf of their communities.

“Whatever the motivation—an unfilled need, a tragic occurrence, a desire to give back—these are people who make things happen and enlist others in their cause,” said Director Mueller. “They are activists who have earned their prestige through good works.”
