Arrest of Shoe Polish Bank Robber

Stephen D. Anthony, Special Agent in Charge of the Cleveland Division of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) for the Northern District of Ohio  announces the arrest of Jonathan P. Black, age 44.

Jonathan P. Black was arrested by the Middleburg Heights Police Department and the FBI’s Violent Crime Task Force on June 26, 2014, on an active county arrest warrant for misuse of a credit card and receiving stolen property.

A tip provided by the public pointed law enforcement’s attention to Black for the armed bank robbery that was committed on May 31, 2014, at the Fifth Third Bank, located at 19053 Bagley Road, Middleburg Heights, Ohio. Surveillance photos of this robbery show the suspect wearing what appears to be black shoe polish on his face. Black was placed into custody on the county arrest warrant while the bank robbery investigation continued.

Information provided by the tipster was corroborated and additional evidence was gathered, leading to a complaint being filed charging Black. The complaint states that probable cause exists that Jonathan P. Black did, by force, violence, and intimidation take from the victim tellers bank monies insured by the FDIC and, in doing so, put in jeopardy the life of persons by the use of a dangerous weapon.

Black will have his initial appearance in federal court today, July 3, at 11:30 a.m.

A complaint is only a charge and is not evidence of guilt. A defendant is entitled to a fair trial in which it will be the government’s burden to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. If convicted, the defendants’ sentences will be determined by the court after review of factors unique to this case, including the defendants’ prior criminal records, if any; their role in the offenses; and the characteristics of the violations. In all cases, the sentences will not exceed the statutory maximum, and, in most cases, it will be less than the maximum.
