Hiroshi H. Miyamura of Gallup, New Mexico, who earned the Medal of Honor for bravery in the Korean War, has received the 2014 FBI Director’s Community Leadership Award for his outstanding work with young people.

FBI Special Agent in Charge Carol Lee presented Mr. Miyamura with a certificate at Hiroshi Miyamura High School in Gallup on February 6, 2015.

Each of the FBI’s 56 field offices annually selects an individual or organization to receive this award, which recognizes contributions toward crime and violence prevention, education and awareness programs, and efforts to enhance cooperation between law enforcement and all citizens.

Mr. Miyamura has been invited to a ceremony that will be held on May 1, 2015, in Washington, D.C., where FBI Director James B. Comey will present all the recipients with engraved crystal awards.

“This is such an honor for me to receive this award from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, a branch of our government that I admire for their dedication in preserving and protecting the welfare of the citizens of the United States of America,” Mr. Miyamura said.

Born in Gallup, Mr. Miyamura returned home after his discharge from the U.S. Army as a staff sergeant in 1953.

Guided by the Congressional Medal of Honor Society’s goal “to inspire and stimulate our youth to become worthy citizens of our country,” Mr. Miyamura has motivated thousands of young people through his work with the Gallup-McKinley County School District, which includes part of the largest Native American Reservation in the United States.

Mr. Miyamura has accepted every invitation to speak to and mentor students enrolled in the district, fostering positive peer-to-peer interaction among students and inspiring many to become role models in their communities.

The district named a high school in honor of Mr. Miyamura in 2007.

Every year, Mr. Miyamura sponsors two scholarships for graduating seniors enrolled in the high school.

Mr. Miyamura also is a presenter during the school’s annual honor roll assembly where he recognizes each student and participates in a yearly ceremony that celebrates teachers and other employees.

In 2011, Mr. Miyamura visited the FBI Albuquerque Division main office, where he spoke to special agents and professional support staff about his life and experiences.

“Hiroshi Miyamura has been an inspiration for countless young people,” SAC Lee said. “He’s been a hero in peace as well as in war, and the FBI is proud to add this award to his long list of accomplishments.”
