In Jackson, WABG-TV6 assistant news director/anchor Tanya Carter works to educate the community while promoting law enforcement. Ms. Carter came to the Mississippi Delta from New York City in July 2003 with a reputation as a direct, no-nonsense reporter. While in high school, Ms. Carter was selected to participate in the Upward Bound program, funded under the Title IV Higher Education Act of 1965. She says the experience was a turning point in her life and gave her the motivation, confidence, and scholarship opportunities to pursue her dream of a career in broadcasting. As a result of her personal experience, she volunteers with the Mississippi Valley State University’s Upward Bound youth summer program, offering career guidance to more than 160 high school students each year, and she has invited members of the Jackson Field Office to participate in the program. Many attendees have said they have a newfound interest in pursuing careers in law enforcement, particularly with the FBI. A 2009 graduate of the FBI Citizens’ Academy, Ms. Carter has been instrumental in providing opportunities for the Jackson Field Office special agent in charge to speak to political and civic groups within the Mississippi Delta community. As a reporter, Ms. Carter has been a strong supporter of law enforcement and has earned the respect of many federal, state, county, and local agencies. She has been the recipient of several humanitarian, journalism, and broadcasting awards. |
