Miami | Alonzo Mourning |
In Miami, former NBA star Alonzo Mourning is the founder of Alonzo Mourning Charities (AM Charities), a non-profit organization with the mission of building strong communities by supporting programs and initiatives that are committed to promoting positive change. Through Mr. Mourning’s efforts, AM Charities has raised more than $7 million for various programs that aid in the development of children and families, including the Honey Shine Mentoring Program, which helps young girls transition into adulthood by offering classes on health, nutrition, literacy, and career mapping. AM Charities also supports the Overtown Youth Center, which opened in 2003 and works with children and families by providing in-school, after-school, weekend, and summer programs designed to empower children in grades two through 12. AM Charities supports Zo’s Fund for Life Mission as well, which was created in 2001 and provides help to individuals and families who have been diagnosed or impacted by kidney disease. Through research, advocacy, and education, the foundation encourages families to schedule routine physicals in an effort to detect and treat rare kidney disease. In addition to his work with specific community organizations, Mr. Mourning supports his local community by hosting youth summits and basketball clinics and assisting families during the holiday season. |
