Number, Race, and Sex of Perpetrators

The number of persons known to be involved in the 1,376 robberies, burglaries, and larcenies was 1,694. The following table shows a breakdown of the 1,694 persons who have been identified by race and sex. In a small number of cases, the use of full disguise makes determination of race and sex impossible.

Investigation to date has resulted in the identification of 619 (37 percent) of the 1,694 persons known to be involved. Of these 619 identified persons, 317 (51 percent) were determined to be users of narcotics, and 128 (21 percent) were found to have been previously convicted in either federal or state court for bank robbery, bank burglary, or bank larceny.

Injuries, Deaths, and Hostages Taken

Acts of violence were committed during 68 (5 percent) of the 1,376 robberies, burglaries, and larcenies which occurred during this three-month period. These acts included 16 instances involving the discharge of firearms, 40 instances involving assaults, and 15 instances of hostage situations. (One or more acts of violence may occur during an incident.) These acts of violence resulted in 31 injuries, six deaths, and 31 persons being taken hostage.
