George Piro Named Special Agent in Charge of the Miami Field Office
FBI Director Christopher Wray has named George Piro as special agent in charge of the Miami Field Office. Mr. Piro most recently served as assistant director of the International Operations Division at FBI Headquarters. From 2014 to 2017, he was special agent in charge of the Miami Field Office and is honored to be selected for this duty again.
Mr. Piro has held a variety of investigative, operational, and management positions within the FBI. He entered on duty in May 1999 and was first assigned as a special agent in the Phoenix Field Office, investigating international terrorism. In 2003, Mr. Piro was promoted to the Counterterrorism Division at FBI Headquarters, where he served as the team leader and interrogator responsible for the interrogation of Saddam Hussein. Mr. Piro spent seven months leading the interrogations of Hussein and other key figures within the former Iraqi regime.
In 2006, Mr. Piro was promoted to supervisor of the Washington Field Office’s Joint Terrorism Task Force. He also served as the assistant special agent in charge of the international terrorism branch there. Mr. Piro deployed throughout the Middle East as part of his multiple counterterrorism assignments during this time.
Mr. Piro next served as the deputy assistant director of the Weapons of Mass Destruction Directorate at FBI Headquarters. He then became director of the High-Value Detainee Interrogation Group (HIG), an interagency unit overseen by the Counterterrorism Security Group within the White House. As HIG director, Mr. Piro was in charge of leading intelligence community and FBI participation.
Mr. Piro was born and raised in Beirut, Lebanon, and is fluent in Arabic and Assyrian. He holds a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Chapman University, a master’s in security studies from Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service, and a master’s certificate in Arab studies. Prior to joining the FBI, Mr. Piro served 10 years as a California police officer.
Among the numerous awards for intelligence and law enforcement service, Mr. Piro received the National Intelligence Medal of Achievement, the FBI Director’s Award for Excellence, and the FBI Medal for Meritorious Achievement.
