Alleged Threat of Gang Violence

SAN JUAN, PR—SAC Douglas Leff announced that the FBI takes any credible threat of violence very seriously and has strict protocols to handle threats to life. However, at this time no such threat has been received by the FBI San Juan Field Office. Specifically, no threat of gang violence has been received at this time.

The terrible violence Puerto Rico has seen in the past days is regrettable and unacceptable. Notwithstanding, entertaining unfounded rumors only causes panic and unrest and does not serve the greater good.

The people of Puerto Rico should rest assured that every law enforcement agency in the Island is doing their part to respond and investigate serious leads, as appropriate. The FBI will continue to offer support to state, federal, and local partners in the fight against crime, as well as investigate every federal crime to its last consequence according to its mission.

Citizens are reminded that putting an end to violent crime, pertains not only to law enforcement, but to everyone. There is always someone who knows something and individuals with information are encouraged to come forward. Great care and resources are put into protecting the identity and lives of those who cooperate with the proper authorities.

The communication avenues for these purposes are as follows:

  • Police of Puerto Rico (787) 343-2020
  • FBI San Juan (787) 754-6000
  • FBI Tips www.Tips.FBI.Gov. Tipsters can remain anonymous.

The public is reminded that individuals are considered innocent until proven guilty.
