As such, the mission of the FBI is to protect and defend the United States against terrorist and foreign intelligence threats, to uphold and enforce the criminal laws of the United States, and to provide leadership and criminal justice services to federal, state, municipal, and international agencies and partners.

As the main law enforcement arm of the federal government, the FBI investigates hundreds of federal violations. These investigations can include counterterrorism; violent crime to include kidnapping, extortion, gangs, fugitives, and bank robberies; civil rights; white collar crime, to include various types of fraud and public corruption; counterintelligence investigations to include espionage; crimes against children to include trafficking, sextortion, and abductions; cyber crime to include computer intrusions, fraud, and piracy; and many more.
