FBI Jacksonville Celebrates Women’s History Month with Visit From First Female FBI Special Agent

JACKSONVILLE, FL—In celebration of Women’s History Month, FBI Jacksonville Special Agent in Charge Sherri E. Onks will welcome a visit from Susan Roley Malone, who was one of the first two females to graduate from the FBI Academy in 1972. In addition to meeting with FBI employees, Malone will join SAC Onks at the FBI Jacksonville Diversity Agent Recruitment (DAR) event on Thursday, March 23, and speak with select professionals in the community who are considering a future career in the FBI.

A retired USMC Colonel, Susan Roley was granted approval to apply for the special agent position following the death of former FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover. Throughout her FBI career, she investigated criminal and national security violations including but not limited to bank robbery, fraud, extortion, bombing, and the high-profile Patty Hearst kidnapping case. She also worked to recruit other diverse candidates to the FBI.

“When you’re the first and a pioneer, you get push back from some people,” said Roley Malone, “but others held out their hands, shared their talents, and assisted in my journey of serving my country as a special agent in the FBI. I will forever cherish them and hope to inspire others like they did me. I look forward to sharing my story with young women and men in Jacksonville and encouraging them to explore a career in law enforcement.” (See video interview.)

“It takes folks from all industries and cultures to accomplish the FBI mission,” said Onks, who is the third female to lead FBI operations in the 40-county Jacksonville Division. “Susan is an inspiration to all women in law enforcement and remains a leader in the FBI’s efforts to diversify our ranks so we can better reflect the communities we serve. I look forward to welcoming her to Jacksonville and helping share her story of triumph and hard work with current and future FBI employees.”

FBI DAR participation is by invitation only. Attendees must apply by March 17 and meet all qualifications. There is no cost to attend, and attendees will not be required to submit a formal employment application following the event.
