GRIT Arrests Milwaukee Man for 1991 Murder of Gary, Indiana Man

MERRILLVILLE, IN—Quentin Maurice Smith, 50, of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, was charged in Lake County Superior Court on June 17, 2022, with one count of Murder for the 1991 murder of 35-year-old John Thomas Currie. Currie was found stabbed multiple times inside his apartment at 2054 Carolina Street in Gary by family members on November 26, 1991.

Smith was arrested Tuesday, June 21, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, by investigators from the FBI Milwaukee Area Violent Crimes Task Force and GRIT where he had just been discharged from parole. Smith is currently awaiting extradition back to Lake County, Indiana.

The charges against Smith are the culmination of work by the FBI Gang Response Investigative Team (GRIT) who began re-investigating the case in 2021.

Investigators re-examined the case file and identified Smith as a suspect upon DNA analysis of evidence found in and around the crime scene.

Other agencies who assisted in the investigation are the Gary Police Department, Lake County Police Department Crime Scene Unit, and the Wisconsin Department of Correction – Parole Commission.

GRIT investigators have been re-investigating a number of cold cases over the last four years and have made several arrests.
