Former Bevill State Community College Business Manager Sentenced for Embezzlement

BIRMINGHAM—A federal judge today sentenced a former Bevill State Community college cashier and business office manager to three months in prison for embezzling $20,000 from the school, announced U.S. Attorney Joyce White Vance and FBI Special Agent in Charge Patrick Maley.

U.S. District Judge Sharon Lovelace Blackburn sentenced JANET ADAMS BOBO, 56, on one count of embezzling and misapplying the money from Bevill State between May 2007 and May 2008. Judge Blackburn ordered Bobo to report to prison June 13 and to serve two years' supervised release after completing her prison term.

“Stealing from the employer’s cash drawer is a crime and deserves punishment,” Vance said. “Mrs. Bobo has taken responsibility for her crime, confessing to the embezzlements and repaying the money she stole from the state college.”

Bobo pleaded guilty to the embezzlement in November. In her plea agreement, Bobo acknowledged she began taking money from a cash drawer several years before 2007.

The embezzlement was discovered in an audit of Bevill State finances by the Alabama Department of Examiners of Public Accounts for the period Oct. 1, 2004, through May 23, 2008, according to the plea agreement. The audit revealed Bobo had embezzled $113,763 from the college while she worked at its Fayette campus. She repaid that amount to Bevill State before the examination was completed and resigned her job with the college in June 2008, the plea agreement says.
