Former Bevill State Community College Business Manager Charged with Embezzlement

BIRMINGHAM—Federal prosecutors have charged a former Bevill State Community College cashier and business office manager with embezzling $20,000 from the school, announced U.S. Attorney Joyce White Vance and FBI Special Agent in Charge Patrick J. Maley.
A one-count information filed today in U.S. District Court charges JANET ADAMS BOBO, 55, embezzled and misapplied the $20,000 from Bevill State between May 2007 and May 2008. A plea agreement also filed today states BOBO began taking money from a cash drawer several years before 2007.
The embezzlement was discovered in an audit of Bevill State finances by the Alabama Department of Examiners of Public Accounts for the period Oct. 1, 2004 through May 23, 2008, according to the plea agreement. The audit revealed BOBO had embezzled $113,763 from the college. She has repaid that amount to Bevill State, the plea agreement says.
“Mrs. Bobo has confessed to the embezzlements that extended over a period of years and has entered into an agreement with the United States to plead guilty to the information,” Vance said.
The maximum penalty for the embezzlement charge is 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
The case is being investigated by the FBI. Assistant U.S. Attorney Pat Meadows is prosecuting it.
