Mr. Schiff: FBI linguists are fluent in different languages. Hasan Gungor was born in Turkey and works in the FBI’s Language Services Section.

Mr. Gungor: “We get tasked with a variety of materials stemming from search warrants, materials from wire taps, crime scene investigations. We also translate for court and we testify at court as well. Also, at times agents will call us for interviews and interrogations with suspects or witnesses they want to talk to.”

Mr. Schiff: Linguist Maha Tannous is from Egypt. She helped an agent communicate with a source in a big case.

Ms. Tannous: “I helped him identify all of the religious nuances, the cultural nuances that were needed in order to gain the trust and the loyalty of that source. And actually the informant was very impressed with how the FBI has people who understand that much about the culture and the language.”

Mr. Schiff: The FBI needs multi-lingual people. You may apply at fbijobs.gov. I’m Neal Schiff of the Bureau, and that’s what’s happening at the “FBI, This Week.”
