James “Whitey” Bulger Sentenced, Part 2

12/04/2013

Mollie Halpern: After a two-month-long trial, notorious Boston crime boss James “Whitey” Bulger is serving a two consecutive life term sentence for 31 counts—including murder and racketeering acts.

Richard Teahan: He was the leader of the Winter Hill gang, an Irish organized crime syndicate that rained terror in the city of Boston.

Halpern: I’m Mollie Halpern of the FBI, and this is Gotcha, part two of the Bureau’s featured case of the week. Bulger and Catherine Greig took off back in 1995. Supervisory Special Agent Richard Teahan says the FBI stood up a task force dedicated to looking for the former Ten Most Wanted Fugitive and his girlfriend.

Teahan: We utilized every investigative method. We did interviews, phone analysis, covered leads worldwide working in concert with foreign law enforcement authorities.

Halpern: A break in case came after the FBI released a public service announcement.

Teahan: That PSA led to some specific information which allowed us to call our LA office, and ultimately led to his capture.

Halpern: After 15 years, Bulger and Greig were arrested in June of 2011 in Santa Monica, California.

Teahan: I think there’s a great sense of relief by the victims’ families. I think there’s closure, some finality to it.

Halpern: For more information on this case, visit www.fbi.gov
