Gila River Man Convicted of Crimes of Domestic Violence

PHOENIX—Jarvis Juan, 26, of Sacaton, Ariz., and a member of the Gila River Indian Community, was found guilty by a federal jury of one felony count of assault with a dangerous weapon and one misdemeanor count of assault by striking, beating, or wounding. The jury trial was held before U.S. District Judge James A. Teilborg from July 26 to 29, 2011.
In March 2010, Juan intentionally ran over the victim, his spouse, with a vehicle that he was driving with the intent to cause her bodily harm. Testimony at trial showed that Juan physically assaulted the victim before and after striking her with the car. After the assault, the victim was air evacuated to Maricopa Medical Center for treatment for her injuries.
Assault with a dangerous weapon carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in federal prison and/or a $250,000 fine. Assault by striking, beating, or wounding carries a maximum penalty of up to six months in federal prison.
The investigation in this case was conducted by the Gila River Police Department and Federal Bureau of Investigation. The prosecution is being handled by Heather H. Belt and Roger Dokken, Assistant U.S. Attorneys, District of Arizona, Phoenix.
