Response to OIG Review of FBI Weapons of Mass Destruction Coordinator Program

Statement of Dr. Vahid Majidi, Assistant Director, Weapons of Mass Destruction Directorate:

"Our response to the recommendations offered by the Office of the Inspector General's (OIG) in its report, The Federal Bureau of Investigation's Weapons of Mass Destruction Coordinator Program, demonstrates our commitment to further strengthen our capabilities and effectiveness as we continue to protect the public from a number of weapons of mass destruction (WMD) threats.

“While the Inspector General's report acknowledges a number of actions the FBI had taken prior to the audit, the Bureau will continue to work with the OIG to identify any additional areas that could be strengthened or improved.

“Established in 2006, the FBI’s Weapons of Mass Destruction Directorate (WMDD) has conducted a series of successful investigations in cases involving a variety of chemical, biological, and radiological threats. Agents and analysts working side-by-side with law enforcement at every level have disrupted WMD-related threats, resulting in a significant number of arrests, indictments, and convictions.

“The men and women serving in WMDD are unrelenting in their efforts to protect the American people from these threats. From investigating ‘white powder’ incidents to a breaking up potential terrorist attacks, we remain committed to strengthening our capabilities and partnerships to prevent, investigate, and resolve these incidents."
