Belcourt Man Sentenced for Interstate Transportation of Stolen Vehicle and Interstate Violation of Protection Order

BISMARCK—U.S. Attorney Timothy Q. Purdon announced that on September 10, 2013, David L. Lilley, 27, Belcourt, North Dakota, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Daniel L. Hovland on charges of interstate transportation of a stolen vehicle and interstate violation of protection order. Lilley pleaded guilty to the charges on May 30, 2013.
Judge Hovland sentenced Lilley to three years in federal prison, to be followed by five years of supervised release. Lilley was ordered to pay a $200 special assessment to the Crime Victim’s Fund and $1,418.21 in restitution.
On February 17, 2013, Lilley stole a vehicle and took a juvenile from the Turtle Mountain Indian Reservation and traveled to Iowa. Lilley was prohibited from having contact with the juvenile because of a protection order issued by the Turtle Mountain Tribal Court.
The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Bureau of Indian Affairs-Turtle Mountain Agency, and the Iowa Highway Patrol.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Brandi Sasse Russell prosecuted the case.
