Mission Woman Sentenced on Assault Charges

PIERRE, SD—U.S. Attorney Brendan V. Johnson announced that a Mission woman charged with assault with a dangerous weapon and assault resulting in serious bodily injury was sentenced on April 18, 2011, by U.S. District Judge Roberto A. Lange. Shana Schmidt, age 37, was sentenced to 51 months in custody, three year of supervised release, $64,088.06 in restitution to Medicaid of South Dakota, and $193.50 in restitution to the South Dakota Crime Victim’s Compensation Fund.
Schmidt was indicted for assault with a dangerous weapon and assault resulting in serious bodily injury by a federal grand jury in August of 2009. The charges stem from a July 11, 2009 incident involving the assault of a Mission woman in Todd County. She was found guilty on both counts as a result of a federal jury trial in Pierre.
This case was investigated by Federal Bureau of Investigation and Rosebud Law Enforcement Services. Assistant U.S. Attorney Eric Kelderman prosecuted the case.
Schmidt was immediately turned over to the custody of the U.S. Marshals.
