Sun Prairie Woman Sentenced for Tax Fraud

MADISON—John W. Vaudreuil, United States Attorney for the Western District of Wisconsin, announced that Cheryl A. McNamee, 47, Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, was sentenced yesterday by U.S. District Judge Barbara B. Crabb to 24 months in prison for tax fraud. McNamee pled guilty to this charge on February 8, 2012.
During both her guilty plea and at sentencing, McNamee admitted to embezzling $595,473 from her former employer, Hexagon Title, between 2002 and 2011. She pleaded guilty to failing to declare the amount she embezzled in 2009 on her tax return for that year. As a result of McNamee’s conduct, Hexagon Title was put out of business and all the employees lost their jobs.
In imposing the sentence, Judge Crabb found that McNamee had abused the trust that Thomas and Gary Hebl had placed in her. Judge Crabb directed McNamee to pay restitution of $469,413 to Thomas and Gary Hebl, the owners of Hexagon Title, and an additional $126,060 to First American Title Company.
The charges against McNamee were the result of an investigation conducted by Internal Revenue Service-Criminal Investigation Division and Federal Bureau of Investigation. The prosecution of the case has been handled by Assistant U.S. Attorney Timothy M. O’Shea.
