Underwater Vehicles • Remotely operated vehicle (ROV): Units come in various sizes and are generally equipped with thrusters, lights, a camera that can transmit high-definition images directly to the surface, and an “articulator” or manipulator that can grab small objects. • Autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV): Underwater robots programmed for specific search patterns. An AUV can dive and execute its search mission without physical contact from the operator. It stores the data it collects underwater. At the end of a dive, the operator can download the data.
