Community Outreach in Action

Top left: On July 14, 2022, FBI Anchorage hosted young women and girls of YWCA’s Justice camp who are exploring careers in law and justice. Their visit to the field office included a presentation about the FBI, visits with staff, and a discussion about 200+ careers in the Bureau. The group was excited to learn the presenters were both from Alaska! Top middle: Twenty-nine students participated in the Teen Academy at FBI Mobile, which was held on June 2-3, 2022. Participants received briefings about the FBI mission and history, recruitment, cyber security, polygraphs, the Evidence Response Team, and Special Weapons and Tactics. Top right: FBI Tampa held its Future Agents in Training – Teen Academy earlier this year. This program allows high school students an opportunity to get a comprehensive look into today’s FBI. The sessions are usually four full days with blocks of instruction and hands-on demonstrations. Second row left: On July 23, 2022, FBI Detroit participated in the NAACP “Know Your Rights” training which was held for the Cameroonian immigrant community in Grand Rapids, Michigan. While there, Bureau staff provided multiple resources, shared safety information, and provided a briefing on the FBI’s Civil Rights Program and Hate Crimes. Second row middle: In June 2022, Community Outreach Specialists Sharon Mentkowski (Buffalo) and Todd Lindgren (Cincinnati) joined Management and Program Analyst Lorie Campbell from FBI Headquarters to provide training at the International Law Enforcement Academy in San Salvador. Participants from Argentina, Columbia, Dominican Republic, Guyana, and El Salvator attended the week-long session. Second row right: The FBI Washington Field Office participated in the “Beat the Streets Annual Summer Series” hosted by the Metropolitan Police Department on July 21, 2022. This event is a traveling community festival that features musical performances, local artists, vendors, and free food. Third row left: FBI Charlotte hosted participants from the Becoming Kings Program, a summer enrichment program run by Johnson C. Smith University (JCSU). Students toured the Field Office and learned about day-to-day operations in the Division. The Becoming Kings Program mentors students from JCSU, a private liberal arts university with proud HBCU traditions. Third row middle: This summer FBI New York hosted its 11th Annual Teen Academy. For two weeks, 62 students attended the class and received briefings on hostage negotiating, organized crime, gangs, cyber bullying, and civil rights. They also participated in practical exercises, including the Physical Fitness Test for Agent Applicants. Third row middle 2: On August 5, 2022, FBI Milwaukee marked the 10th anniversary of the Oak Creek Sikh Temple shooting, where seven people were killed. The community held several events to remember the victims. The following day, FBI employees participated in a workshop on civil rights, hate crimes, and victim services at the gurdwara. Bureau personnel also provided resource materials to members of the Sikh community. Third row right: FBI Baltimore participated in eight National Night Out events throughout Maryland and Delaware. National Night Out is an annual community building campaign that promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie to make neighborhoods safer. Bottom middle: On July 7, 2022, the New Jersey Office of Homeland Security & Preparedness – Interfaith Advisory Council met at Rutgers University. FBI Newark participated on the panel, which discussed civil rights violations, hate crimes, domestic terrorism awareness, cybersecurity threats impacting institutions, and outreach programs. Bottom right: FBI Buffalo partnered with the YWCA of the Niagara Frontier to host an online safety program for children of Carolyn’s House (a supportive housing program for homeless women and children) and other youngsters from the local area.
