FBI Philadelphia Art Crime Case - English Ferguson breech loading rifled carbine

This item was stolen from Valley Forge on October 24, 1968. This carbine was designed by Joseph Hunt and patented in 1776. It’s considered to be a mounted officer’s model. The carbine is stamped “FERGUS” directly behind the vertical breechplug. It’s also marked with the words “HUNT 14”—with the “HUNT” engraved and the “14” stamped—immediately forward of the breechplug. A strike of a crown over the entwined initials “GP” and a crown over V (these are considered an ingaglio cartouche) are located on each side of the breech. The carbine’s lock is engraved between the cock and the pan with a large crown and the Royal cypher “GR.” The word “HUNT” is also vertically engraved across the tail of the lockplate. The carbine is 43.5 inches long, its barrel is 28 inches long, and its lock is 5 and 3/16 inches long. The firearm is made of walnut wood and equipped with a lanyard slide and ring. The trigger guard is an accurate replacement of brass, but the original guard would’ve been made of iron. The vertical plug is original, and its upper surface is engraved.
