Mollie Halpern: The FBI’s Law Enforcement Officers Killed and Assaulted statistics show 86 law enforcement officers were killed in the line of duty in 2015.

Forty-one of those officers were feloniously killed as a result of criminal acts in 21 states and Puerto Rico.

Christopher Nicholas, a section chief at the FBI’s Criminal Justice Information Services Division, says the statistics so far for 2016 are tracking up compared to last year.

Christopher Nicholas: So far in 2016, the number of law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty is the same number in total as it was in 2015. Moreover, the number of law enforcement officers killed feloniously is up six deaths year-to-date, and we still have a few months to go.

Halpern: In addition to the law enforcement officers who were killed, another 50,212 of them were victims of line-of-duty assaults in 2015.

Nicholas: What we’re seeing this year is an increase of single incidents with multiple officer deaths and assaults.
