Mollie Halpern: The FBI’s annual Hate Crime Statistics report shows a 53 percent increase in the number of multiple-bias hate crime incidents when compared to the year before.

Furthermore, single-bias incidents jumped 6.5 percent during the same time period. 

Christopher Nicholas: And the numbers were 5,818 as compared to 5,462.

Halpern: That was Section Chief Christopher Nicholas of the FBI’s Criminal Justice Information Services Division.

2015 was the first year the FBI began collecting data on anti-Arab bias—which resulted in a count of 37 incidents.

This is the 25th anniversary of the FBI gathering and publishing data about bias-motivated crimes.

Nicholas: Our annual hate crimes report provides us information about offenses, victims, offenders, and locations of hate crimes.
