Mollie Halpern: A man wanted for the murder of his girlfriend and her toddler is the 501st person added to the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted Fugitives list. Juan Garcia is also an alleged MS-13 gang member.
I’m Mollie Halpern of the Bureau, and this is FBI, This Week. Chief of the Violent Crimes Unit John Kitzinger explains why placement on the nearly 65-year-old list will bring national and international attention to Garcia’s case.
John Kitzinger: It’s designed to publicize particularly dangerous fugitives and utilize the media and the public to provide information as to their whereabouts.
Halpern: The selection process for a Ten Most Wanted fugitive begins with a canvass in the FBI’s 56 field offices across the country.
Kitzinger: The nominees received are reviewed by special agents, and, ultimately, executive management at FBI Headquarters decides who goes on that list.
Halpern: Garcia case agent Reynaldo Tariche...
Reynaldo Tariche: We believe placing Juan Garcia on the Top Ten list sends a strong message to the MS-13 and other violent organizations that no matter where you run, you’ll have no place to hide—whether in the United States or anywhere in the world, we’re coming after for you.
Halpern: A reward of up to $100,000 is being offered for information leading to Garcia’s arrest. For more information and photos, visit www.fbi.gov.
