FBI Director Robert S. Mueller, III Appoints Counterintelligence Executives

In an effort to further strengthen the FBI's Counterintelligence Program, FBI Director Robert S. Mueller, III today announced the appointments of the following individuals to key posts:

Timothy D. Bereznay, Deputy Assistant Director, Counterintelligence Division: Mr. Bereznay joined the FBI in 1976 as a support employee. He became a special agent in 1981 and has since served in the Baltimore, Kansas City, and New York Field Offices. While Mr. Bereznay was assigned to FBI Headquarters in 1996, he was promoted to assistant special agent in charge of the Washington Field Office, where he coordinated espionage investigations. In 1999, Mr. Bereznay was appointed as the section chief of the Eurasian Section in the National Security Division. Most recently, he served as the special agent in charge of the National Security Division in the Washington Field Office.

Daniel L. Cloyd, Chief, Eurasian Section, Counterintelligence Division: Mr. Cloyd entered on duty in March 1985. He has served in the Buffalo, Washington, and Houston Field Offices. In 1995, while in Houston, Mr. Cloyd supervised a foreign counterintelligence squad, and, subsequently, the Houston Joint Terrorism Task Force. Most recently, Mr. Cloyd has served as assistant special agent in charge of the Washington Field Office, where he was responsible for foreign counterintelligence and counterespionage matters. Mr. Cloyd received the Attorney General's Award for Excellence in Furthering the Interests of U.S. National Security in July 2000.

Ronald T. Guerin, Chief, East Asia Section, Counterintelligence Division: Mr. Guerin entered on duty with the Bureau in 1976 and has since served in the Oklahoma City and Washington Field Offices. Mr. Guerin has been assigned to several sensitive counterintelligence investigations including the Larry Wu-Tai Chin, Aldrich Ames, and Earl Pitts investigations. In 1991, Mr. Guerin became the first FBI agent to receive the National HUMINT Collector Award from DCI William Webster for his efforts. Most recently, Mr. Guerin has served as the deputy of the Strategic Plans and Policy Group, where he engages the counterintelligence community and develops a national counterintelligence strategy on an annual basis.

Michael T. Rochford, Chief, Espionage Section, Counterintelligence Division: A 27-year Bureau veteran, Mr. Rochford began his career with the FBI as Russian translator and, after becoming a special agent, has served in the Washington and Memphis Field Offices. During his time in the Washington Field Office, Mr. Rochford worked on significant espionage cases, such as the David Henry Barnett investigation. While at FBI Headquarters, Mr. Rochford supervised such cases as Aldrich Ames and Earl Pitts. Most recently, Mr. Rochford has served as the unit chief for the Overseas Espionage Unit in the Counterintelligence Division, where he is responsible for major investigations such as those of Robert Philip Hanssen and George Trofimoff.
