Alex J. Turner Named Assistant Director of Security Division

Director Robert S. Mueller, III has named Alex J. Turner assistant director of the FBI’s Security Division. This division is responsible for ensuring a safe and secure work environment for FBI employees and others with access to FBI facilities and for preventing the compromise of national security and FBI information. Mr. Turner most recently served as the deputy assistant director for the division.

Mr. Turner began his career as a special agent with the FBI in January 1985. He first reported to the Atlanta Division, where he investigated drug and property crime matters. He also served as an undercover agent in numerous FBI investigations.

In 1988, Mr. Turner was designated to manage the Atlanta Multi-Agency Gang Task Force, which addressed violent street gangs. In 1993, he was selected to establish and supervise the Atlanta Regional Drug Intelligence Squad, which was tasked to develop and manage drug intelligence for FBI field offices in the Southeast region of the United States.

Mr. Turner was promoted in 1995 and assigned to the Administrative Summary Unit in the Administrative Division at FBI Headquarters in Washington, D.C. While there, he handled the adjudication of serious internal disciplinary matters. He then returned to the Atlanta Division in 1997 to oversee the drug squad and later the general property crime squad.

In November 2000, Mr. Turner was assigned as an assistant special agent in charge of the Washington Field Office. At various times during this assignment, he managed the technical services, white-collar crime, public corruption, cyber, criminal intelligence, violent crime, criminal enterprise, asset forfeiture, and criminal informant programs.

Mr. Turner was temporarily detailed to the Criminal Investigative Division at FBI Headquarters in 2005, where he successfully established the National Gang Intelligence Center before assuming the duty of chief of the Americas Criminal Enterprise Section. In this role, he oversaw national-level program management for the FBI’s violent gang, drug, and major theft investigative programs.

In January 2008, Mr. Turner was appointed special agent in charge of the Norfolk Division and served there for four years.

Before joining the FBI, Mr. Turner served as a patrol officer and criminal detective for the Greenbelt City Police Department in Greenbelt, Maryland. He has a bachelor’s degree in criminology from the University of Maryland.
