Katherine Schweit: The FBI has been working to develop extensive guides on establishing emergency operations plans for schools K through 12, institutions of higher education, and houses of worship.

Halpern: One major study showed that one-third of active shooter situations happened in schools.

Schweit: We want the public to think about it, to talk about it with their kids, school administrators, parent/teacher groups, with their congregation members so that they’re better prepared. It’s a sad reality that these situations occur, but they do occur.

Halpern: For more information, visit www.fbi.gov.
