Former Jail Guard Pleads Guilty to Steroids Charges

BUFFALO, NY—U.S. Attorney William J. Hochul, Jr. announced today that Richard Lazzaro, 39, of Cheektowaga, New York, pleaded guilty before Chief District Judge William M. Skretny to distributing anabolic steroids. The charge carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison, a fine of $500,000, or both.

According to Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael L. McCabe, who is handling the case, Lazzaro obtained and distributed steroids while employed as a detention officer at the Buffalo Federal Detention Facility in Batavia, New York.

The plea was the culmination of an investigation on the part of special agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, under the direction of Special Agent in Charge Christopher Piehota; and special agents of the Department of Homeland Security, Office of Inspector General, under the direction of Gregory K. Knull.
