Two Individuals Charged as Part of Ongoing Corruption Investigation Sentenced Today

The United States Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Pennsylvania announced today that two individuals charged as part of the ongoing public corruption investigation were sentenced today in federal court in Scranton.
According to United States Attorney Peter J. Smith, Sandra Brulo, age 59, of Ashley, Pennsylvania and William T. Sharkey, Sr., age 59, of West Hazleton, Pennsylvania, were both sentenced by United States District Court Senior Judge Edwin M. Kosik. Judge Kosik sentenced Brulo to a two year term of probation and a $3,000 fine, Sharkey was sentenced to a 10-month term of imprisonment and three years of supervised release. Judge Kosik also order Sharkey to pay $70,362.78 in restitution.
On February 17, 2009, Sharkey pleaded guilty to embezzling over $70,000 in seized gambling proceeds from Luzerne County and converting the money to his own use between June of 1998 and June 2008.
On March 26, 2009, Brulo pleaded guilty to the obstruction of justice after she corruptly altered a juvenile court file with the intent to impair the file’s integrity.
Both cases were investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and by the criminal investigators of the Internal Revenue Service and prosecution is being handled by a team of federal prosecutors led by Senior Litigation Counsel Gordon Zubrod and includes Assistant U.S. Attorneys William Houser, Michael Consiglio, Amy Phillips and Criminal Division Chief Christian Fisanick.
