Maryland Man Sentenced for Dakotaland Federal Credit Union Robbery

U.S. Attorney’s Office March 14, 2012
  • District of South Dakota (605) 330-4400

U.S. Attorney Brendan V. Johnson announced that Gary Allen Densmore, age 56, formerly of Glen Burnie, Maryland, was sentenced in Baltimore, Maryland, to a total of 157 months in prison—97 months in prison followed by three years of supervised release for three counts of bank robbery, plus 60 months in prison, consecutive to that sentence, for violating his supervised release on previous federal convictions. He was also ordered to pay restitution of $17,474.

Densmore was indicted by a federal grand jury in South Dakota for the February 14, 2011 bank robbery of the Dakotaland Federal Credit Union in Brookings, South Dakota. On that day, Densmore entered the Credit Union wearing a dark winter coat and a black stocking cap. He handed a teller a handwritten note demanding cash be put in a blue zipper bag he provided. The note also stated that he had a gun. The teller placed some cash in the bag, and Densmore left the Credit Union without saying a word the entire time. Densmore was apprehended on March 3, 2011, in Savage, Minnesota, when a police officer observed a car with no front license plate backed into a parking space at a motel. A database check of the Maryland license plate found on the back of the car revealed that the car had been stolen. When police arrested Densmore that day, they found a winter coat, stocking cap, and blue zipper bag that all matched those used by the robber in Brookings.

Densmore’s Brookings robbery was part of a larger crime spree that included robbing banks using the same method in Glen Burnie, Maryland, on February 2, 2011; Wauwatos, Wisconsin, on February 10, 2011; and Des Moines, Iowa, on March 1, 2011.

He pled guilty to the South Dakota robbery on May 10, 2011, and his case was transferred to federal court in Maryland for sentencing.

The investigation was conducted by the Brookings Police Department and the FBI. The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Jeffrey C. Clapper.
