Oglala Woman Sentenced for Abuse of a Minor

United States Attorney Brendan V. Johnson announced that an Oglala woman charged with abuse of a minor was sentenced on June 20, 2011, by United States District Judge Jeffrey L. Viken. Angela Jean Yellow Horse, age 19, was sentenced to 30 months’ imprisonment, three years of supervised release, and a $100 special assessment to the Victim Assistance Fund.
Yellow Horse was indicted for abuse of a minor by a federal grand jury on October 19, 2010. Between January and March 2010, Yellow Horse shook her infant son because he was crying and would not stop. The child suffered swelling on the brain, which required several surgeries. Yellow Horse pled guilty to the charge on April 1, 2011.
This case was investigated by the FBI, the BIA, and the Oglala Sioux Tribe Department of Public Safety. Assistant United States Attorney Britt M. Haxton prosecuted the case.
Yellow Horse was immediately turned over to the custody of the United States Marshal.
