Salvisa Resident Sentenced for Bank Robbery

U.S. Attorney’s Office August 25, 2009
  • Eastern District of Kentucky (859) 233-2661

LEXINGTON, KY—The United States Attorney’s Office and the Federal Bureau of Investigation jointly announced today that 31-year-old Retta Lerai Dennis of Salvisa, Kentucky, was sentenced yesterday by United States Senior District Court Judge Joseph M. Hood to 37 months in prison for bank robbery.

In March of 2009, Dennis pleaded guilty to the charges and admitted that she dressed herself as a man before robbing the Lawrenceburg National Bank branch on Ben Ali Drive in Danville, Kentucky.

Dennis entered the bank and presented the teller with a demand note stating she had a gun. Dennis received approximately $2,310 from the teller and subsequently fled the bank.

Shortly after the robbery, law enforcement officers recovered the clothing worn by Dennis as well as the majority of the money taken from the bank. A co-defendant, Becky L. Metcalf, drove Dennis to and from the bank. Judge Hood sentenced Metcalf to 37 months in prison on June 1, 2009.

Under federal law, Dennis must serve 85 percent of her prison sentence, and, upon release, will be under the supervision of the United States Probation Office for three years.

The investigation was conducted by the Danville Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The United States was represented by Assistant United States Attorney Robert M. Duncan, Jr.
