HAMMOND, IN—United States Attorney David Capp announced the filing of a felony information against Jack A. Schaap. Schaap, 54, of Dyer, Indiana, and Crete, Illinois, was charged with interstate transportation of a minor with intent to engage in criminal sexual activity in violation of Title 18, United States Code, Section 2423(a). Schaap signed a plea agreement that was filed in conjunction with the felony Information.

Schaap will have his initial appearance tomorrow, September 19, at 3 p.m. before Magistrate Judge Paul Cherry.

The charge was filed as a result of an investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. This case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys Jill Koster and Susan Collins.

The United States Attorney’s Office emphasized that an Information is merely an allegation and that all persons charged are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty in court.

If convicted in court, any specific sentence to be imposed will be determined by the judge after a consideration of federal sentencing statutes and the Federal Sentencing Guidelines.
