Former MetroHealth Medical Center Director Convicted in Cuyahoga County Public Corruption Probe

U.S. Attorney’s Office June 08, 2010
  • Northern District of Ohio (216) 622-3600

Thomas J. Greco was convicted by a jury today on 13 charges in connection with the Cuyahoga County public corruption investigation. Greco, former Director of Facility Services at MetroHealth Medical Center, was convicted of charges of conspiracy to commit bribery, federal program fraud, Hobbs Act conspiracy, tax charges, and other charges.

The jury found that Greco, along with John J. Carroll, former Vice President of Facilities and Institutional Services for Metro, and Nilesh R. Patel, former Vice President of East West Construction Company, participated in a bribery conspiracy spanning several years.

The jury found Greco and Carroll solicited and accepted from Patel travel, gift cards, home improvements, and other items. In exchange, Greco and Carroll exercised their discretion to East West’s advantage on Metro contracts. Greco, Carroll and Patel funded the bribes by causing Metro to pay inflated costs to East West. Carroll and Patel, who were charged previously, have pleaded guilty and await sentencing.

United States District Judge Kathleen O’Malley scheduled sentencing for Aug. 12 at 1 p.m.

The government’s case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Antoinette T. Bacon and Robert Patton, following an investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Internal Revenue Service Criminal Investigation Division.

The investigation is ongoing.
