Massachusetts Woman Pleads Guilty to Lying to Federal Grand Jury

PORTLAND, ME—United States Attorney Thomas E. Delahanty, II announced that Yaira Ramos, 30, of Saugus, Massachusetts, pled guilty today in United States District Court before Judge D. Brock Hornby to making a false declaration to a federal grand jury.

According to court records, in June 2008, Ramos was subpoenaed to testify before a federal grand jury that was investigating the June 2007 robbery of the Ultra Diamonds jewelry store in Kittery. Ramos was asked about an incident that occurred shortly after the robbery, when she was at the apartment of her then-boyfriend, Miguel Caraballo. Ramos had observed two other individuals, Kelvin Morales and Sam Rodriguez, come into the apartment with black trash bags. When asked whether she had ever found out what was in the bags, Ramos replied that she had not. In fact, Ramos later admitted to an FBI agent that she had seen Morales take a display box with jewelry out of one of the bags. Caraballo, Morales, and Rodriguez were separately prosecuted, convicted, and imprisoned for their involvement in the robbery.

Ramos faces a sentence of up to five years’ imprisonment, a fine of up to $250,000, or both. She will be sentenced after the completion of a presentence investigation report by the United States Probation Office.

The investigation was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
