  • District of New Mexico (505) 346-7274

ALBUQUERQUE—United States Attorney Kenneth J. Gonzales announced that today in federal court in Albuquerque, Johnny Eldrid Ortiz, 34, of Albuquerque, was sentenced to a 37-month term of imprisonment to be followed by three years of supervised release for robbing a Wells Fargo Bank branch in Albuquerque, New Mexico, on January 4, 2010. Ortiz also is required to pay restitution to the bank for the cash he stole.

Court filings reflect that, on January 4, 2010, the Wells Fargo Bank located at 6000 Menaul Boulevard, Northeast, Albuquerque, New Mexico (Bank), was robbed at approximately 3:45 p.m. The robber fled on foot after obtaining cash from bank tellers. After the robbery, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and Albuquerque Police Department (APD) received numerous tips identifying Ortiz as the bank robber, and two witnesses identified Ortiz as the robber from a photo array. On September 1, 2010, the FBI received a tip from a person who reported that Ortiz had confessed to robbing the Bank. Based on this information, the FBI obtained an arrest warrant for Ortiz.

Ortiz was indicted for bank robbery on October 14, 2010, and was arrested on November 12, 2010. He has been in federal custody since his arrest. Ortiz pled guilty to the indictment on March 30, 2011.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Louis E. Valencia, and was investigated by the FBI and APD.
