SAN JOSE, CA—A federal grand jury in San Jose indicted Peter Franklin Klein, of Gilroy, Calif., today with eleven counts of armed bank robbery, United States Attorney Joseph P. Russoniello announced.

According to the indictment, between December 2007 and March 2009, Klein is alleged to have robbed nearly $400,000 from eleven banks in Santa Clara, Santa Cruz and Monterey counties. Klein was arrested by the Gilroy Police Department on March 27, immediately after his armed robbery of the Chase Bank in Gilroy, and remains in state custody.

The investigation began in December 2007 following the armed bank robbery of the Union Bank of California, in Gilroy by an unknown suspect. Klein’s arraignment in federal court is pending.

The maximum statutory penalty for each count of armed bank robbery in violation of 18 U.S.C. § 2113(d)  is 25 years imprisonment and a fine of $250,000 plus restitution. However, any sentence following conviction would be imposed by the court after consideration of the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and the federal statute governing the imposition of a sentence, 18 U.S.C. § 3553.

Daniel Kaleba is the Assistant U.S. Attorney prosecuting the case with the assistance of Susan Kreider. The prosecution is the result of an investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Please note, an indictment contains only allegations against an individual and, as with all defendants, Mr. Klein must be presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
