Arrest Made in Serial Bank Robbery Investigation

San Diego FBI Special Agent in Charge Keith Slotter announces the arrest of Anthony Pernelle Burgess, age 30, of San Diego, California, as a result of the investigation into the “Well Dressed Bandit” serial bank robbery investigation.

Burgess was taken into custody earlier today at approximately 6:45 a.m., in the vicinity of the 5500 block of Friars Road. Burgess was arrested by San Diego Police robbery detectives, patrol oOfficers, and FBI agents. Burgess was taken into custody without incident.

In a complaint filed with the U.S. District Court, Southern District of California, Burgess is charged with one count of violating Title 18, United States Code, Section 2113(a), bank robbery. Burgess is charged with robbing the Chase Bank, located at 9450 Scranton Road, San Diego, California, on Friday, September 23, 2011.

According to the complaint, on Friday, September 23, 2011, the Chase Bank, located at 9450 Scranton Road, San Diego, California, was robbed by an unknown male. The unknown male robber approached the victim teller, simulated having a weapon pointed with his right hand and demanded cash. The teller complied with the robber’s demand and provided a sum of money. Throughout this robbery, the robber simulated having a weapon by placing his hand in his jacket.

The robber exited the bank and was observed by a witness entering the driver’s side of a black Mercedes Benz or Lexus. The witness also provided a partial license plate number. Additional interviews of witnesses, review of bank surveillance video, and analysis by a San Diego Police Department analyst, assisted in identifying Burgess as the person responsible for robbing the Chase Bank, located at 9450 Scranton Road, San Diego, California, on Friday, September 23, 2011.

The robbery of the Chase Bank, 9450 Scranton Road, San Diego, California, on Friday, September 23, 2011, is considered one of 10 bank robberies in the “Well Dressed Bandit” series.

  • June 17, 2011—Point Loma Credit Union, 10413 Craftsman Way, San Diego

  • September 23, 2011—Chase Bank, 9450 Scranton Road, San Diego

Burgess has been booked into the San Diego County Jail and expected to appear before a U.S. Magistrate Judge on or about Friday, October 21, 2011.

An arrest itself is not evidence that the defendant committed crimes charged. The defendant is presumed innocent until the government meets its burden in court of proving guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
