United States Attorney Brendan V. Johnson announced that Thomas Wasicu Hehaka Janis, age 26, of Pine Ridge, appeared before U.S. District Judge Jeffrey L. Viken on June 1, 2011, and pled guilty to assault with a dangerous weapon. The maximum penalty upon conviction is 10 years' imprisonment and/or a $250,000 fine.

In September 2010, Janis struck another person in the leg with a metal bar, causing a fracture that required surgery. The investigation was conducted by the FBI. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Sarah B. Collins.

A presentence investigation was ordered, and a sentencing date will be set at a later date. The defendant continued on bond pending sentencing.
