Two Charged in Armed Robbery

ALLENTOWN, PA—Dane Alton Spring and Ireneusz Mietelski were charged by criminal complaint today with conspiracy to commit the armed robbery of the Garda armored car storage vault facility, located at 500 Corporate Drive in Reading, PA, announced United States Attorney Zane D. Memeger. The defendants are also charged with attempted armed robbery and possession of a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence. The two were arrested at the scene of the crime by FBI agents on the morning of January 8, 2011. Spring is a sitting state constable for Berks County and a former employee of Garda. Both defendants appeared in court this afternoon for initial appearances before Magistrate Judge Arnold C. Rapoport and are being held in custody pending detention hearings. Spring’s detention hearing is scheduled for tomorrow at 1:30 p.m.; a detention hearing for Mietelski is scheduled for 1:30 Wednesday. Both proceedings will take place in Allentown, PA.

The filing of a formal indictment or information will follow.
If convicted, each defendant faces a mandatory minimum sentence of five years in prison to be served consecutively to any other sentence imposed, with a maximum possible sentence of life, a fine of up to $750,000, five years’ supervised release, and a $300 special assessment.
The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Seth Weber.
