Philadelphia Man Charged in Attempted Bank Robbery

An indictment1 was filed today against Irving Alvin charging him with conspiracy to commit armed bank robbery, attempted armed bank robbery, use and carrying of a firearm during the commission of a crime of violence, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon in connection with an alleged attempted armed bank robbery, announced United States Attorney Michael L. Levy. According to the indictment, Alvin, together with another male, Demetrius White, who is now deceased, conspired to commit an armed robbery at the PNC Bank located at 317 Fayette Street, in Conshohocken, Pennsylvania, on May 1, 2009, while both were armed with loaded 9mm handguns. The indictment alleges that as Irving fled the scene, he threw a bag containing a larger duffle bag, a black cut-off T-shirt sleeve, a screwdriver, 20 clear plastic zip straps, and a fully loaded Smith & Wesson 9mm pistol onto a garage rooftop, before he was apprehended by Conshohocken police approximately eight blocks from the bank.

If convicted of the offenses charged, the defendant faces a maximum penalty of life imprisonment, an aggregate mandatory minimum sentence of 20 years’ imprisonment, five years’ supervised release, a fine of $1,000,000, and a special assessment of $400.

This case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation Violent Crimes Task Force in cooperation with the Conshohocken Borough Police Department. It is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Joseph T. Labrum III.
