Lincoln Man Sentenced for Bank Robbery and Brandishing a Weapon During Crime of Violence

United States Attorney Deborah R. Gilg, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the Lincoln Police Department announce the following information for the attention of the media:

Event Triggering this Release:

Geoffery Essay was sentenced by Senior District Court Judge Warren K. Urbom to a prison term totaling 147 months for bank robbery and brandishing a weapon during a crime of violence. Essay was sentenced to 63 months for the bank robbery of the Union Bank in Lincoln, Nebraska, on April 24, 2009. Essay was also given a consecutive 84-month prison term for brandishing a handgun during the course of the bank robbery. As part of the sentence, Essay was ordered to serve five years of supervised release and pay $1,044 to Union Bank. Essay was also ordered to pay $200 in special assessments to the United States. Essay also forfeited any interest in the handgun used in the robbery.

On April 24, 2009, Essay went into the Union Bank, located at 4800 Normal Blvd., Lincoln, Nebraska, and demanded money from the bank teller. During the course of the robbery, Essay brandished a handgun. After the robbery, Essay attempted to flee but was apprehended by the Lincoln Police Department after a brief chase. The handgun, the disguise used by Essay, and the stolen money were all located by the police.
