Mashpee Man Sentenced for Cape Bank Robbery

BOSTON—A Mashpee man was sentenced today in federal court after pleading guilty to the armed bank robbery of a Rockland Trust branch in Bourne.
SPRAGUE BUCHANAN, 39, of Mashpee, was sentenced today by United States District Judge Joseph L. Tauro to 60 months’ imprisonment to be followed by five years of supervised release and restitution in the amount of $776. BUCHANAN pleaded guilty on August 24, 2010.
On November 17, 2009 BUCHANAN, armed with a dangerous weapon, entered the Rockland Trust located on Clay Pond Road in Bourne. Once inside BUCHANAN brandished an item, which resembled a handgun, and demanded money from the teller. After the teller complied with BUCHANAN’s demands, he then fled from the bank. His twin brother, Travis Buchanan, was waiting for him in a vehicle in a neighboring McDonalds’ parking lot, where they fled from the scene. Both men were later arrested at a Mashpee home, in possession of the money and the weapon. Travis Buchannan is currently awaiting trial.
United States Attorney Carmen M. Ortiz and Richard DesLauriers, Special Agent in Charge of the Federal Bureau of Investigation - Boston Field Division made the announcement today. The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Violent Crime Task Force, the Bourne and Mashpee Police Departments and the Barnstable County District Attorney’s Office. It was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Kenneth G. Shine of Ortiz’s Major Crime Unit.
