Gregory D. Cox Named Special Agent in Charge of the Counterintelligence Division at the Washington Field Office

Director James B. Comey has appointed Gregory D. Cox special agent in charge of the Counterintelligence Division at the Washington Field Office. Mr. Cox most recently served as chief of the Global Operations Section in the Counterintelligence Division at FBI Headquarters.

Mr. Cox began his career as a special agent with the FBI in March 1991. He was first assigned to the Washington Field Office, where he worked drugs, gangs, and criminal enterprise matters.

From 1996 to 2002, he was an operator on the Hostage Rescue Team based in Quantico, Virginia. During that time, Mr. Cox participated in numerous criminal and counterterrorism tactical operations throughout the world. He was then assigned to an International Terrorism Operations Section in the Counterterrorism Division at FBI Headquarters to serve as a supervisor and program manager overseeing al Qaeda and Osama Bin Laden matters.

In January 2005, Mr. Cox transferred to the Sacramento Division as supervisory special agent and program manager for the division’s International Terrorism Program. He was promoted in August 2007 to assistant special agent in charge of the division’s Intelligence Branch.

Mr. Cox was selected as the legal attaché to Copenhagen, Denmark, in August 2009, where he worked to enhance the relationship between the FBI and foreign partners in five countries. His efforts led to the expansion of the office and the opening of a sub-office in Stockholm, Sweden.

Before joining the FBI, Mr. Cox served as an officer with the Berea Police Department in Ohio. He has a bachelor’s degree in political science from Wittenberg University.
