Fairfax Man Sentenced to 78 Months in Prison for Assaulting and Resisting Federal Police Officers

U.S. Attorney’s Office October 22, 2013
  • Eastern District of Virginia (703) 299-3700

ALEXANDRIA, VA—Jay Bonanza Briley, 52, of Fairfax, Virginia, was sentenced today to 78 months in prison, followed by three years of supervised release, for assaulting, resisting, opposing, and impeding officers of the United States Park Police during their attempts to lawfully arrest him and for disorderly conduct in a federal park.

Dana J. Boente, Acting United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, and Valerie Parlave, Assistant Director in Charge of the FBI’s Washington Field Office, made the announcement after sentencing by United States District Judge Liam O’Grady.

Briley was found guilty on March 11, 2013, after a two-day jury trial. According to court documents, on the afternoon of January 12, 2012, officers of the United States Park Police observed Briley naked and engaging in a public sexual act in the front seat of a vehicle parked at Daingerfield Island, near the Washington Sailing Marina. Daingerfield Island is an area of federal parklands adjoining the George Washington Memorial Parkway and the Mount Vernon Trail.

Park Police officers then approached Briley, who was still in his vehicle, to arrest him for disorderly conduct. After being informed of the officers’ identities, however, Briley refused to exit his vehicle peacefully. Briley assaulted one officer by kicking him in the stomach and violently resisted the other officers as they tried to remove him from the vehicle. Even after Briley was out of the vehicle, he attempted to run away, dragging two officers for several yards until they brought him to the ground behind his vehicle.

This case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Assistant United States Attorneys Rosanne C. Haney and Gene Rossi and Special Assistant United States Attorneys Vikram Jagadish and Jonathan Keim prosecuted the case on behalf of the United States.
