Tim Ferguson, assistant director, Criminal Justice Information Services Division: Even though we are working behind the scenes, the FBI's Criminal Justice Information Services Division is at the forefront of public and officer safety. We receive, triage, and analyze threats every day.
The National Threat Operations Center receives over 5000 calls and electronic tips per day. Our teams quickly share pertinent information to our agents and partner officers from around the world can stop the threats. This includes thousands of potential school shootings.
Situated on our state-of-the-art campus in West Virginia, thousands of dedicated FBI employees collaborate with partners to provide critical resources and criminal justice information to law enforcement protecting the United States.
Every day, the CJIS Division receives more than 10 million inquiries to the National Crime Information Center.
We are the gateway to 1.6 billion law enforcement incident reports in the National Data Exchange and 87 million criminal fingerprints, mug shots and rap sheets in the Next Generation
Identification System.
Additionally, we support mobile biometrics technology to give officers on the street a powerful identification tool when and where they need it.
Our 24-7 command centers like the one behind me are tracking current events and requests from law enforcement to stay ahead of the threat.
The services also directly benefit you, the American people.
The National Instant Criminal Background Check System staff works to ensure firearm background checks are accurately completed as soon as possible to protect your second Amendment rights, while also preventing prohibited persons from obtaining firearms to potentially harm our communities. Over 90% of the time, these determinations are made within minutes.
The CJIS Division has a no fail mission. Through data collection and sharing, program development and officer training, the CJIS Division works daily
to securely provide 19,000 partner agencies the information they need to keep you safe.
While you may not see these employees in the field, when you see good officers arresting violent criminals, know they're often relying on the work of the CJIS Division.
