Ask an ASAC: Resident Agencies
Watch Seattle Assistant Special Agent in Charge discuss our nine satellite offices for FBI Seattle, called resident agencies. One of the benefits of working in a resident agency is that these agents are exposed to many types of investigations.

Public Affairs All right, Kelly, you're an Assistant Special Agent in Charge in the Seattle Division of the FBI. But what I think people might not understand is that there are other offices in Washington State. Can you explain what these are?
Seattle ASAC Yeah. The Seattle Division of the FBI actually covers the entirety of Washington State. And while our largest contingent of investigators and personnel sit here in Seattle, we have folks spread throughout the state and in your community. We have nine other offices located across Washington state, and resident agencies are just another word for satellite offices. Each of those offices are a microcosm of what we have here in Seattle with investigators covering all investigative programs from the FBI in their local communities.
Public Affairs So these smaller offices or resident agencies report to Seattle?
Seattle ASAC Correct. So most of the resident agencies, depending on the size, may or may not have a supervisor located within those offices. And those supervisors report to myself here in Seattle.
Public Affairs So the agents in these offices, do they work only a specific kind of crimes like you might see on a squad in a major field office, or are they responsible for all sorts of things?
Seattle ASAC Well, one of the benefits of working in a resident agency is that you are exposed to a broader amount and broader type of investigations. So as an agent that worked in two different resident agencies, I was exposed. I came into the bureau as a CPA. I have a white collar background, but I worked both violent crime and white collar crime because I was in an resident agency.
Seattle ASAC So if you wanted to compare it to baseball, most of our agents working in resident agencies are utility players, sort of jack-of-all-trades that have to work every type of investigation.
Public Affairs So there might be an office in a smaller city that people don't even realize. So how big typically are RAs?
Seattle ASAC Our RAs probably span from about 4 to 8 agents, and that means probably anywhere from 6 to 20 employees per office.
Public Affairs Thank you so much.
