Chicago School Principal Describes Unique Challenges

Charles Williams, principal at the Plato Learning Academy, a school on Chicago's South Side, invited the FBI to speak to kids about making good choices.

You know, we talk about Maslow, right? About basic needs. And, you know, we talk a lot about test scores … And I think a lot of times we forget that these students come to school with a lot of other basic needs that may have yet to be met. They may be 12-13 years old, but a lot of times, I think, they're living the lives of adults. When I look into their eyes and I talk to them, you see that. And so I think that we need to address that issue. And that’s one of those things that I’m trying to do. So, that way they can be kids and they can, then, focus on those academics. But it’s really hard to focus on those things when you’re worried about what's happening outside, what’s happening at home, those types of things.
